ABOUT THE COURSE :
This MOOC introduces research and research methods in a clear, accessible way. It covers core concepts and practices, primarily for postgraduates but open to all. The course centers on student engagement through practical discussions and exercises that reflect SOAS, University of London’s strong research tradition.
It is designed for anyone needing to understand and apply research methods in academic or professional settings. It supports postgraduate students with limited access to research training and those seeking extra guidance. No prior research experience is needed.
The course builds on material from SOAS, especially the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD). It was nominated for the 2015 Guardian University Award for innovation in online learning.
Completing the course does not provide academic credit for University of London programmes.
No prior knowledge or experience in research is required.
The course is open to anyone interested in learning research methods.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Dr J. Simon Rofe
Simon is a university lecturer with over 15 years of experience teaching Diplomacy, International Relations, and History. He has won several teaching awards, including an International E-learning award in 2010. His research focuses on US foreign relations and the diplomacy of international sport.
