The CERN Doctoral Student Programme offers fully funded opportunities for PhD candidates to complete part of their doctoral research at CERN — the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland. This programme is aimed at students working in applied physics, engineering, computing, and related technical fields (note: theoretical and experimental particle physics are covered by other specific CERN programmes).

Participants spend 6 to 36 months at CERN, joining world-leading teams that develop cutting-edge technologies and solutions. This experience allows students to deepen their research skills, work in a highly international and collaborative environment, and contribute to some of the most advanced scientific projects in the world.

Nationality: Open to nationals of CERN Member States or Associate Member States.
Degree status: Must be enrolled in a PhD programme at a recognized university at the time of application.
Field of study: Applied physics, engineering (electrical, electronic, mechanical, civil, materials), IT/computing, mathematics, radiation protection, safety, environment, ultra-high vacuum, instrumentation, surveying, or science communication.
Research requirement: Work done at CERN must form an integral part of the PhD thesis and be approved by the applicant’s university supervisor.
Language: Good working knowledge of English or French (English is the main working language).

Curriculum Vitae (CV) (mandatory).
Motivation letter explaining research goals and interest in CERN.
Proof of PhD enrollment at a recognized university.
Master’s and PhD transcripts or academic record.
Thesis project description signed or approved by the PhD supervisor.
Two reference letters (including one from the PhD supervisor).
Passport or valid ID copy for identification and contract preparation.

Create an account and complete the online application form.
Upload all required supporting documents (CV, motivation letter, transcripts, thesis details, etc.).
Enter contact details for referees (CERN will contact them directly to submit recommendation letters).
Submit the application before the stated deadline.
Wait for the selection process. Shortlisted applicants may be contacted for further details or an interview.
Successful candidates receive an official offer and contract for 6–36 months at CERN.

Monthly allowance: Approx. CHF 3,891 net per month.
Travel allowance: One-time lump-sum payment for a round trip from the home country to CERN.
Family supplements: Additional support if married/registered partner or with dependent children.
Health insurance: Coverage under CERN’s CHIS health insurance scheme (shared contribution between CERN and the student).
Paid leave: 2.5 days per month plus CERN public holidays.
Contract duration: Initial 12 months, renewable up to 36 months; possibility of up to 12 months special leave to return to your university.
Training and networking: Access to world-class facilities, seminars, technical workshops, and collaboration with top scientists and engineers.
Tuition fees: CERN does not pay university tuition or enrollment fees.

Is it fully funded?
Yes. CERN provides a monthly allowance, travel support, health insurance, paid leave, and family supplements if applicable.
Can Master’s students apply?
No. You must already be enrolled in a PhD programme when applying.
Do I need to speak French?
No. English is the primary working language. French is useful but not mandatory.
Are all fields accepted?
No. The programme is for applied physics, engineering, IT/computing, and technical fields — not for theoretical or experimental particle physics.
Who can apply by nationality?
