The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, administered annually by the U.S. Department of State, was created under Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). This program is designed to promote diversity among immigrants by providing visas to individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. For Year 2025, up to 55,000 diversity visas (DVs) will be issued, allowing a wide range of people from around the world the opportunity to become permanent residents of the U.S. Participation in the DV program is free, and applicants who are selected must meet specific eligibility criteria to qualify.

The selection process for the Diversity Visa Program is randomized, conducted through a computerized drawing managed by the Department of State. The program ensures equitable distribution by allocating visas across six geographic regions, with a limit that no country can receive more than seven percent of the available visas in any given year. This system helps maintain a balanced flow of immigrants from diverse regions around the world. Country of Birth: Applicants must be born in a country that is eligible for the program. Countries with high immigration rates to the United States over the past five years are excluded from participation. For DV-2025, nationals from countries such as Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India, and Mexico, among others, are ineligible. However, those from Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible to apply.
Education or Work Experience: Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Have at least a high school education or its equivalent (completion of a 12-year course of elementary and secondary education).
- Have two years of work experience within the last five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform.

Recent Photo: A digital photograph that meets the U.S. Department of State's specifications (size, background, etc.).
Personal Information: Accurate details such as your full name (as it appears on your passport), date of birth, gender, place of birth, and contact information.
Country of Eligibility: Information about your country of birth or the country you are applying under, if eligible through your spouse or parents.
Education/Work Information: Details about your highest level of education or qualifying work experience.

No additional documents, such as passports or birth certificates, are required during the initial application. Only provide the information and photo required on the electronic application form.

Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet the requirements based on your country of birth and education or work experience. If ineligible by birth, check if you qualify through your spouse or parents.
Submit Your Application: Go to he website during the registration period and complete the entry form with accurate information, including a valid photo. Keep your confirmation number.
Check Results: Use your confirmation number to check the results on the DV website on the announced date. If selected, follow the instructions for the visa process.

Permanent Residency: Successful applicants receive a U.S. Green Card, granting them permanent residency in the United States, allowing them to live and work legally in the country.
Path to Citizenship: After maintaining permanent residency for a certain period (typically five years), DV visa holders are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship, unlocking additional rights and benefits.
Opportunity for Family Members: Selected applicants can bring their spouse and unmarried children under 21 to the U.S., enabling family reunification and the opportunity for them to also obtain permanent residency.
