The Eric Bleumink Fund (EBF) was created by the University of Groningen to support talented students from developing countries who cannot otherwise afford to study abroad. Since its launch in 2000, the fellowship has aimed to strengthen academic capacity in low-income countries while building partnerships between the University of Groningen and universities worldwide.

Each year, a small number of exceptional students are selected for fully funded Master’s degree studies in the Netherlands. The fellowship is highly competitive and based on both academic excellence and financial need.

Nationality: Applicant must be a citizen of a country classified by the University of Groningen as eligible developing countries.
Admission: Must have received (provisional or unconditional) admission to a Master’s program at the University of Groningen before 1 December of the year prior to the start of study.
Academic Excellence: Strong academic record, with excellent grades in previous studies.
English Proficiency: Must meet the English language requirements of the selected Master’s program (usually IELTS or TOEFL).
Financial Need: Must demonstrate lack of alternative means to finance studies abroad.
Health: Must be in good physical and mental health to be eligible for Dutch health insurance.
Program Start: Must be able to start studies in September.

Proof of admission (conditional or unconditional) to a Master’s program at the University of Groningen
Official academic transcripts and degree certificates
Curriculum Vitae (CV) or résumé
Motivation letter / statement of purpose
Two recommendation letters (academic or professional)
Proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent, if required by the program)
Passport copy
Any additional documents requested during the Master’s program admission process

Apply for a Master’s program at the University of Groningen before 1 December of the year before your studies begin.
The Admissions Office and the relevant Faculty Admission Boards review applications and select students who meet the fellowship requirements.
Candidates who are considered for the Eric Bleumink Fellowship will be nominated by the University — you cannot apply directly for the scholarship.
If nominated, you will be informed by 1 February.
If you have not been contacted by 1 February, this means you were not selected for nomination that year.

1. Can I apply directly for the Eric Bleumink Fellowship?
No. You must first apply for admission to a Master’s program. The University selects and nominates candidates automatically.

2. How many scholarships are awarded each year?
Only a very limited number of fellowships are awarded annually, making it highly competitive.

3. When should I apply for my Master’s program?
Before 1 December of the year prior to your intended start date to be eligible for nomination.

4. What happens if I am not nominated?
If you are not notified by 1 February, you have not been selected and there is no appeal or separate application option.

5. Is the funding for one year or two years?
It depends on the length of your Master’s program — the fellowship can cover one or two years.
