The Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It supports international students who want to study in Japan through several categories, including Research Students, Undergraduate Students, Teacher Training Students, Japanese Studies Students, College of Technology Students, Specialized Training College Students, and Young Leaders Program students.

Students can apply through two main routes: Embassy Recommendation or University Recommendation. Embassy Recommendation means applying through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country, while University Recommendation means applying through a Japanese university that may nominate selected students to MEXT.

Many students only focus on the Embassy route, but there are also many MEXT opportunities through University Recommendation, especially for Master’s and PhD applicants. Students should check Japanese university websites, search for programs in their field, and apply to other scholarships as well to increase their chances.

Research Students are usually for applicants who want to study at graduate level, including Master’s, PhD, or non-degree research study.
Undergraduate Students are usually for applicants who want to complete a bachelor’s degree in Japan.
Applicants must meet the age, academic, nationality, health, and language requirements listed in the official guidelines for their category.
Applicants must pass the selection process, which may include document screening, written exams, and an interview.

MEXT application form.

Graduation certificate or expected graduation certificate.
Recommendation letter.
Certificate of Health.
Passport or national ID copy, if required.
Language certificate, if available or required.
Field of Study and Research Plan, especially for Research Students.
Placement Preference Application Form, especially for Research Students.
Certified English or Japanese translations for documents not written in English or Japanese.
Any additional documents required by the Japanese Embassy in your country.

Applicants must read the official guidelines carefully because each category and country may have different document requirements. Study in Japan states that the application forms, Certificate of Health, and Recommendation Letter should be submitted to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s country.

- If selected, you will be nominated to MEXT for final approval
University Recommendation
- Apply directly to a Japanese university offering MEXT scholarships
- The university screens and recommends candidates to MEXT
- Most often used for graduate-level programs

What is the deadline for the MEXT Scholarship?

The MEXT Scholarship deadline is different from country to country. For Embassy Recommendation, each Japanese Embassy or Consulate sets its own schedule, so applicants must check the Japanese Embassy website in their own country. Study in Japan also states that schedules differ by nationality and applicants should contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their country for details.

Examples of recent deadlines in some Arab countries:

Iraq: 1 June 2026 for Research Students. Other categories are currently suspended for Iraqi nationals.
Yemen: 23 May 2026 for Research Students.
Algeria: 1 June 2026 for Research Students; 15 June 2026 for Undergraduate, College of Technology, and Specialized Training College Students.
Egypt: 14 May 2026 for Research Students; 21 May 2026 for Undergraduate and College of Technology Students.
Saudi Arabia: 18 June 2026 for Undergraduate, Specialized Training College, and Research Students.
Qatar: 11 June 2026.
United Arab Emirates: 22 May 2026 for Research and Undergraduate programs.

Is the MEXT Scholarship fully funded?

Yes. The MEXT Scholarship usually covers tuition fees, monthly allowance, and round-trip airfare to Japan.

Is the deadline the same for all countries?

No. Each Japanese Embassy or Consulate has its own deadline and process. Applicants must check the Japanese Embassy website in their country.

Can I apply through any Japanese Embassy?

No. For Embassy Recommendation, applicants usually apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality.

Can I apply for Master’s or PhD study?

Yes. Students who want to apply for Master’s, PhD, or graduate research usually apply under the Research Students category.

Can I apply for undergraduate study?

Yes, but only if the Undergraduate Students category is open in your country for that year.

Do I need to know Japanese?

Not always. Some programs are available in English, especially at graduate level. However, applicants should be willing to learn Japanese, and some categories may include Japanese language training.

Should I apply only through the Embassy route?

No. Students should also check University Recommendation opportunities offered by Japanese universities. This can be a strong option, especially for graduate applicants.
