The Research Internship at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a fully funded, 3–6 month research placement for high-achieving students in the final two years of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, as well as recent graduates. Designed as a pathway toward the OIST PhD program, the internship provides participants with immersive, hands-on research experience within a specific laboratory under the close supervision of internationally recognized faculty. Interns engage in cutting-edge research across a wide range of STEM disciplines, benefiting from OIST’s advanced facilities, interdisciplinary structure, and collaborative research culture.

Admission to the Research Internship is highly competitive, with selections made twice a year based on academic merit, alignment between the applicant’s background and the host research unit, and laboratory availability. OIST strongly values diversity and inclusivity, actively encouraging applications from women and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. Successful interns receive a comprehensive support package that includes a daily stipend of 2,400 JPY, furnished on-campus accommodation, a round-trip airfare, and full administrative support for visa processing and local registration, allowing them to focus entirely on their research experience.

Academic Status: Applicants must be enrolled in the final two years of a Bachelor’s degree, currently pursuing a Master’s degree, or be recent graduates of either program at the time of application.

Academic Transcripts: Official records from your current or completed degrees (scanned PDF copies).
Recommendation Letters: You must provide one to three letters of recommendation from faculty or supervisors familiar with your work.
Identification: A valid copy of your passport or a government-issued ID.

Create an Account: Register on the OIST application portal.
Prepare and Upload Documents
Register Your Recommenders: Provide the email addresses of 1 to 3 academic referees (professorial-level). The system will automatically email them a link to upload their letters.
Note: You can only hit the final "Submit" button once at least one letter has been received by the system.

Financial Support: A daily stipend of 2,400 JPY to cover living expenses throughout the internship period.
Accommodation: Furnished on-campus housing provided at no cost, allowing interns to live within the OIST research community.
Travel Support: A round-trip economy-class air ticket between the intern’s home country and Okinawa, Japan.
Visa and Administrative Assistance: Full support with visa arrangements, local registration, and other required administrative procedures upon arrival.

Who can apply for the Research Internship?

How long is the internship?
The internship lasts 3 to 6 months and must be completed on a full-time basis during one of the designated internship periods.

Is the internship fully funded?
Yes. The program is fully funded and includes a daily stipend, free on-campus housing, round-trip airfare, and visa and administrative support.

Do I need to contact a faculty member before applying?
No. Applicants select preferred research units in their application, and placements are determined based on academic fit, faculty availability, and lab capacity.

What language is used at OIST?
English is the official working language for research, communication, and instruction at OIST.

How competitive is the program?

The Research Internship is highly competitive. Selection is based on academic excellence, research potential, alignment with the host lab, and availability of space.

Does completing the internship guarantee admission to the PhD program?
No. While the internship is an excellent preparation and pathway toward the OIST PhD program, admission to the PhD is not guaranteed and requires a separate application.

When are applications reviewed?
Applications are reviewed twice a year, corresponding to the two annual internship selection cycles.
