The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) offers two highly regarded research internship programs for talented students in the natural sciences, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, neuroscience, and interdisciplinary fields:

Scientific Internships (Year-Round): Flexible research placements lasting up to 12 months, available throughout the year.
ISTernship Summer Fellowship: A competitive 2–3 month summer research program held between May and September.

These internships provide an excellent opportunity for bachelor’s and master’s students — or recent graduates — to gain hands-on research experience while working closely with world-class scientists. Participants engage in real research projects, learn advanced techniques, and become part of an international academic community at ISTA.

Internship placements are usually managed by the head of a research group (Professor or Assistant Professor) or staff scientists, with availability depending on project funding and approval by ISTA’s Academic Affairs division. Applications for year-round internships are accepted on an ongoing basis, and candidates are encouraged to directly contact research group leaders whose work aligns with their interests. For the summer ISTernship, students apply through a centralized online call, usually opening in December–January with a deadline in early February.

These programs foster a collaborative and innovative research environment, helping participants develop their technical skills, expand their professional networks, and prepare for future graduate studies or research careers.

Open to bachelor’s and master’s students, as well as recent graduates, in natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, neuroscience, or related fields.
Summer ISTernship applicants must have completed at least the fourth semester of a bachelor’s program or be enrolled in/just completed a master’s degree.
Students already enrolled in a PhD program before the start date are not eligible for the ISTernship.
Applicants should demonstrate strong academic performance, motivation, and interest in research.
Both domestic and international students may apply.

Curriculum Vitae (CV) detailing academic achievements, skills, and any research experience.
Motivation Letter / Statement of Purpose explaining research interests, why you want to join ISTA, and your career goals.
University transcripts (official or unofficial accepted if clearly legible).
Degree certificates or proof of current enrollment (if still studying).
Contact details for referees (at least one academic referee, some groups may require two).
Passport copy or another valid ID for international applicants.

For Year-Round Scientific Internships

Explore ISTA’s research groups on the official website.
Contact the group leader or staff scientist directly via email with your CV, motivation letter, and desired internship period.
If accepted, the research group and ISTA Academic Affairs will finalize your appointment.

For ISTernship Summer Fellowship

Apply via the official ISTernship online portal when the call opens (usually December–January).
Submit CV, motivation letter, transcripts, and referee contact information.
Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for additional details.
Successful applicants receive an official offer, internship contract, and travel/accommodation guidance.

Monthly salary: Approx. EUR 1,523 per month for year-round scientific interns.
Travel allowance: ISTernship fellows receive a lump-sum travel grant to cover flights and travel expenses.
Accommodation support: Assistance in finding on-campus housing or nearby student residences.
Health insurance guidance: Help with arranging insurance for international students.

Are ISTA internships paid?
Yes — year-round interns earn about EUR 1,523 per month, and ISTernship fellows receive travel support.
How long do the internships last?

Do I need to contact a professor for the summer program?
No. Summer ISTernship applicants apply centrally and are matched with research groups. Direct contact is required only for year-round internships.

Is there an application fee?
No. ISTA does not charge any application fees.
When is the deadline for the ISTernship?
Typically early February each year for the summer intake. Year-round internships accept applications at any time but should be submitted at least two months before your intended start date.
