The Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 2018. Founding members include the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and 36 other scientific institutions, universities, and international organizations. ANSO aims to enhance regional and global capabilities in science and technology, improve human livelihoods and well-being, and promote wider cooperation and communication in scientific and technological fields.

The CAS-ANSO Scholarship (previously known as the ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents) was launched in 2019 to cultivate and train young scientists from around the world. This scholarship offers two categories: degree and non-degree programs. The degree program supports 100 to 200 Master's students and 300 Ph.D. students annually, providing them with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate education at leading Chinese institutions, including the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), and other Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) institutes across China.

A sub-category of the CAS-ANSO Scholarship, the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO Ph.D. Scholarship, was officially launched in 2022. This program gives special attention to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and women as part of its mission to diversify access to educational opportunities. Up to 40 Ph.D. students from developing countries are selected each year by TWAS/UNESCO. This initiative is primarily sponsored by CAS, with additional funding from TWAS and UNESCO, aiming to build a more inclusive scholarship program.

Citizenship: Applicants must not hold Chinese citizenship. This scholarship is exclusively for international students from developing countries.
Age
- Master’s program applicants must be born on or after January 1st, 1995 (inclusive).
- Ph.D. program applicants must be born on or after January 1st, 1990 (inclusive).
Educational Background
- Applicants must meet the admission criteria for international students at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) or the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS).
- Master’s program applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Ph.D. program applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent.
Language Proficiency
- Applicants must be proficient in English or Chinese, depending on the language of instruction for their chosen program. Relevant language proficiency documentation may be required.
Concurrent Studies in China
- Applicants who are currently pursuing a Master’s degree at any university or institution in China are not eligible to apply for the Master’s program under this scholarship.
- Applicants who are currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree at any university or institution in China are not eligible to apply for the Ph.D. program.
- Violating this rule will result in disqualification and may be reported to their current institution.
Scholarship Exclusivity
- Applicants must not take up any other assignments or hold another scholarship during the period of the CAS-ANSO Scholarship.
Health
- Applicants must be in good health, both mentally and physically, to complete their studies in China.

Passport Copy: A clear scan of your passport information page.
Degree Certificates: Master’s applicants: Submit your Bachelor’s degree.
Ph.D. applicants: Submit both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
Academic Transcripts: Official transcripts from all previous degrees (Bachelor’s/Master’s) in English or Chinese (with certified translations if needed).
Recommendation Letters: Two letters from professors or academic advisors.
Research Proposal/Study Plan:
- Master’s: Submit a study plan (500–800 words).
- Ph.D.: Provide a detailed research proposal (800–1000 words).
Language Proficiency:
- English-taught programs: TOEFL/IELTS scores.
- Chinese-taught programs: HSK scores.
- A language waiver may apply if previous education was in English.
Health Examination Report: A recent medical check-up report (within 6 months).
CV: Outline your academic background, research, and relevant experience.
No Criminal Record Certificate: Issued by your local authority.
Other Supporting Documents: Certificates, awards, or publications (for Ph.D. applicants, if applicable).

- Select whether you are applying for the Master’s or Ph.D. program.
- Identify which institution you want to study at: University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), or other Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) institutes.
Check Eligibility and Admission Criteria
- Ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements outlined by the CAS-ANSO Scholarship and the admission criteria for international students of your chosen institution (USTC/UCAS/CAS and UNESCO-TWAS).
Prepare Required Documents: prepare the following application materials based on the chosen options such as USTC/UCAS/CAS or UNESCO-TWAS
Submit an Online Application:
For USTC Applicants: Visit the USTC international students’ application portal and follow the instructions for submitting your documents.
For UCAS Applicants: Apply through the UCAS international students’ portal by creating an account and completing the online application form.
For CAS Institutes: Apply through the relevant CAS institute’s online application system if your program is hosted there.
Same for UNESCO-TWAS
Apply for the CAS-ANSO Scholarship
- In addition to submitting your application to USTC, UCAS, or CAS institutes, you must also apply for the CAS-ANSO Scholarship directly via the official ANSO Scholarship portal (when available), which will require you to provide the same documents and follow any additional instructions.
Track Your Application Status
- Keep track of your application status via the portal you used to submit your application. Each institution may have specific timelines for processing applications.
Await Notification
- Successful candidates will be notified via email or through the application portal regarding the next steps and formal admission processes.
Additional Tips:
- Apply early to ensure that your application is considered in time.
- Ensure all documents are submitted in either English or Chinese; if they are in another language, a certified translation must be provided.

Tuition Waiver: Full coverage of tuition fees for the entire duration of the program (Master's or Ph.D.).
Monthly Stipend
- Master’s students: RMB 3,500 per month.
- Ph.D. students: RMB 6,000 per month.
- This stipend helps cover living expenses such as accommodation, food, and daily needs.
Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical insurance for the entire duration of the study period in China.
Accommodation: On-campus accommodation or a housing allowance may be provided, depending on the institution (USTC/UCAS/CAS institutes).
Travel Subsidies (for specific programs): Some scholarships may include a one-time travel subsidy for international students to cover part of the travel expenses to and from China.
