The DAAD Study Scholarships – Postgraduate Studies in the Field of Architecture offer international graduates the opportunity to continue their education in Germany through a postgraduate or continuing course of study in architecture.
This scholarship is designed for students in fields such as Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Design, Urban Development, Landscape Architecture, and Landscape Planning. It supports applicants who want to study at a state or state-recognised German university.
Eligibility :
Applicants must have completed a first university degree in a relevant field such as Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Design, Urban Development, Landscape Architecture, or Landscape Planning.
As a rule, the last relevant university degree should not be older than 6 years at the application deadline.
Applicants who have been resident in Germany for more than 15 months at the application deadline cannot be considered.
The chosen study programme must be at a state or state-recognised German university.
Funding is not available for a Master’s or postgraduate programme that has already started in Germany.
The selected degree programme should include enough credits in the area of Design/Projects. For example, a 120-credit programme should include at least 45 credits in Design/Projects.
Applicants must meet the language requirements of their chosen universities.
For English-taught programmes, applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency, such as IELTS or TOEFL, according to the requirements of the chosen universities.
For German-taught architecture programmes, universities usually expect very good German language skills, normally B2 or C1. For the DAAD scholarship application, proof of German language skills at the level of completed B1 must be submitted.
Required documents :
Applicants should prepare the following documents:
Full curriculum vitae in tabular form.
Letter of motivation, maximum 2 pages, explaining the academic and personal reasons for the planned study project in Germany.
Explanation of the career prospects that the chosen Master’s programme in Germany will enable the applicant to pursue.
Form “Information about your preferred master programmes”.
Letter of acceptance from the host university in Germany, if available.
If admission has not yet been received at the time of application, it must be submitted before the funding period begins.
Current transcript of records with individual grades and explanation of the grading system.
University degree certificate showing final grades. If the degree has not yet been completed, the certificate must be submitted before the scholarship-supported study programme begins.
German or English translations of all documents submitted in another language.
List of designs or plans that will later be uploaded to the DAAD media database, including details such as size, date of creation, and place.
Declaration form confirming that the designs or plans were produced or created by the applicant.
Proof of German language skills for German-taught programmes, normally at least completed B1 level for the DAAD application.
Proof of English language proficiency for English-taught programmes, such as TOEFL or IELTS, according to the chosen universities’ requirements.
Other relevant documents, such as employment certificates or proof of internships or placements.
Important: Work samples and portfolios should not be uploaded to the DAAD portal. They are submitted separately through the DAAD media database after DAAD reviews the application.
How to apply :
The application is submitted online through the DAAD portal.
Applicants should follow these steps:
Choose suitable postgraduate or Master’s programmes in Germany in the field of architecture.
Check the admission requirements, language requirements, and deadlines of the selected universities.
Register in the DAAD portal during the application period.
Complete the online application form.
Upload all required application documents to the DAAD portal in PDF format.
Do not upload portfolios or work samples directly to the DAAD portal.
If the application passes the formal check and meets the programme requirements, DAAD will send a link to upload work samples to the DAAD media database.
Upload the required work samples to the DAAD media database before the stated deadline.
Applications for this scholarship programme are usually possible between 1 June and the stated application deadline. The DAAD portal closes at midnight Central European Time on the final application day, so applicants should submit their application early to avoid technical problems.
The Scholarship Benefits:
Monthly stipend: Scholars receive a monthly payment of 992 euros to support living costs in Germany.
