The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is the Korean government’s flagship program to attract talented international students for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies. It includes one year of Korean language training followed by full degree programs at leading Korean universities.
The scholarship is managed by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) and aims to promote global academic exchange, strengthen cooperation between Korea and other countries, and help students achieve academic excellence in a world-class education system.

Eligibility :
Applicants and their parents must hold non-Korean citizenship
Must meet degree requirements for the chosen program:
Undergraduate: Completed or about to complete high school
Master’s: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
PhD: Master’s degree or equivalent
Strong academic record (usually a high GPA from the previous degree)
Age limits may apply depending on the level of study (generally under 25 for undergraduate and under 40 for graduate applicants)
Applicants must be in good physical and mental health
Required documents :
Completed application forms
Academic transcripts and degree certificates
Personal statement and study plan or research proposal
Two letters of recommendation
Proof of nationality (passport or national ID)
Certificate of Korean or English language proficiency (if required)
Medical examination form (may be required after initial selection)
Any other documents requested by the applying embassy or university
How to apply :
Prepare Your Documents
Gather all required materials: transcripts, certificates, personal statement, recommendation letters, proof of language ability, and health form if needed.Choose an Application Track
Embassy Track
Apply through the Korean Embassy in your home country.
Submit your application package directly to the embassy.
The embassy conducts the first screening and forwards selected candidates to NIIED.
Allows you to apply to multiple universities (usually up to 3).
Deadline: Typically early to late September (often around September 30).
University Track
Apply directly to one participating Korean university.
The university reviews applications and recommends selected candidates to NIIED.
Good for students who already know their preferred university.
Deadline: Usually late September to October (varies by university).
NIIED Final Selection
NIIED reviews recommendations from embassies and universities and announces the final list of scholarship recipients.Pre-Arrival Steps
Accepted candidates complete visa procedures and prepare for one year of Korean language training before starting their degree.
