Eligibility :
  • Open to researchers from all countries except Germany.

  • Applicants must be postdoctoral researchers or experienced researchers.

  • Applicants may come from any academic field.

  • Postdoctoral applicants should have completed their doctorate within the last 4 years, or be close to completing it before the relevant selection meeting.

  • Experienced researchers should have completed their doctorate within the last 12 years and should have a strong publication record and an independent research profile.

  • Applicants must not have lived in Germany for more than 90 days in total during the 18 months before submitting the application.

  • Applicants must have a host researcher in Germany who provides:

    • mentoring agreement,

    • host statement,

    • confirmation that research facilities are available.

  • Applicants must provide two expert reviews.

  • Applicants must have suitable language skills:good English or German for natural sciences and engineering,
    good German if needed for humanities, social sciences, or medicine; otherwise English may be sufficient.

  • Applicants who have already received direct Humboldt Foundation sponsorship through a research fellowship or award cannot apply again for this fellowship.

Required documents :
  • Curriculum vitae, maximum 2 pages.

  • Research outline, maximum 5 pages.

  • Complete list of publications.

  • List of selected key publications.

  • Key publications.

  • Doctoral certificate or proof that the doctorate has been completed.

  • Confirmation that the doctorate will be completed before the selection meeting, if applicable.

  • German language certificate, if required.

  • Acceptance notifications or summaries/translations for key publications, if required.

  • Two expert reviews uploaded directly by the reviewers.

  • Detailed host statement from the German host.

  • Confirmation that research facilities are available in Germany.

How to apply :
  • Find a suitable host researcher at a German research institution.

  • Prepare your research project with your host.

  • Create or access your application through the Humboldt online application system.

  • Upload all required documents.

  • Ask your expert reviewers to upload their reviews through the protected system.

  • Submit the application online only.

  • After submission, your host receives a link to upload the required host documents.

  • The application is only forwarded to the Humboldt Foundation after the host uploads all required documents.

  • Applications are reviewed through a formal eligibility check, peer review, and selection committee process.

The Scholarship Benefits:
  • Monthly fellowship amount of €3,000 for postdoctoral researchers.

  • Monthly fellowship amount of €3,600 for experienced researchers.

  • Additional financial benefits may be available.
