The Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB) Scholarship is a prestigious financial assistance program offered by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to prospective international students from developing countries. Established to promote deeper cultural understanding and strengthen diplomatic ties, the program allows scholars to pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees at top-tier Indonesian universities. It reflects Indonesia's commitment to South-South cooperation by nurturing future leaders from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.


Managed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, the scholarship provides a comprehensive academic experience that begins with a mandatory Indonesian Language (Bahasa Indonesia) and preparatory course. This ensures that international scholars are well-equipped to integrate into the local academic environment and society. The program covers a vast array of disciplines, including Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education, offered across more than 30 partner universities nationwide.


Recipients of the KNB Scholarship benefit from a fully funded package that covers all academic and living expenses, allowing them to focus entirely on their studies and research. Eligibility :

To be eligible for the KNB Scholarship, applicants must fulfill the following general and level-specific requirements:

  • Nationality: Must be a citizen of a developing country or a country with bilateral relations with Indonesia.

  • Age Limits (by December 31):
    Bachelor's:
    Maximum 21 years old.
    Master's: Maximum 35 years old.
    Doctoral: Maximum 40 years old.

  • Academic Background: Applicants must hold a relevant previous degree (High School for Bachelor's, Bachelor’s for Master’s, Master’s for PhD). Holders of the same degree level they are applying for are ineligible.

  • English Proficiency: Minimum scores required (within the last 2 years):
    Bachelor's: TOEFL iBT 53, IELTS 5.5, or TOEIC 510.
    Master's: TOEFL iBT 61, IELTS 6.0, or TOEIC 575.
    Doctoral: TOEFL iBT 71, IELTS 6.0, or TOEIC 640.
    Note: Applicants from English-speaking countries or those with degrees taught in English are exempt with official proof.

Required documents :
  • Completed online application form.

  • Scanned copy of a valid passport (valid for at least 2 years).

  • Academic certificates and transcripts (legalized by the Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs in the home country).

  • Recommendation Letter from the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate General.

  • Recommendation Letter from an employer or immediate supervisor.

  • Academic Recommendation Letter from the previous school/university.

  • Statement of Purpose (explaining interest in Indonesia and future academic plans).

  • Research Proposal (Mandatory for Doctoral applicants).

  • Official Medical Statement from a certified physician.

How to apply :
  • Download Invitation Letter: Visit the official KNB website to download the "Offer Letter."

  • Contact Indonesian Embassy: Submit the Offer Letter, your passport, and academic documents to the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in your country to obtain a formal Recommendation Letter.

  • Online Registration: Create an account on the KNB Scholarship portal (link provided in References).

  • Upload Documents: Fill out the application form and upload all required files, including the Embassy Recommendation Letter.

  • Administrative Selection: The Ministry and Indonesian Embassies will verify all documents.

  • Academic Selection: Shortlisted candidates will undergo interviews or academic assessments by the host universities.

  • Final Announcement: Check the results on the official website. Successful candidates will then process their student visas and travel arrangements.
