The University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship is a fully funded opportunity for outstanding students pursuing a PhD at one of New Zealand’s top research universities. Open to both domestic and international applicants, the scholarship provides full tuition fee coverage for up to 36 months along with a living stipend of NZD 33,624 per year. Candidates must demonstrate strong academic performance, typically with a Master's degree that includes a substantial research component.

Applications are accepted year-round through the university’s eVision portal. Once accepted into a PhD program, candidates are invited to apply for the scholarship directly through the same system. The selection process evaluates academic merit, research potential, and alignment with the university's research priorities. This scholarship supports high-impact research across a wide range of disciplines in a globally recognized academic environment.

Eligibility :
  • Open to domestic and international students

  • Must be applying for first doctoral degree

  • Admission and enrollment in a PhD program required

  • GPA based on advanced-level courses and thesis (if applicable)

  • Strong research potential or record

  • Recommendation from Head of Department

  • Research must align with university’s priorities

  • International students get tuition waiver at domestic rate

  • Credential evaluation may be required for non-NZ/Australian degrees

  • Cannot hold other scholarships over 50% of Otago scholarship value
